The Arun to Adur Farmers Group has purchased 300 large barrel bird feeders which have been distributed across member’s farms.
Since the project began we have been buying in bird seed every year to fill the feeders. This year our members have grown and provided the seed to feed our birds through the ‘hungry gap’. We have collected wheat, barley, oil seed rape, linseed, vetch, buckwheat, rye and millet. This has all been mixed together and is now ready to feed hungry birds through the winter.
This benefits key species such as Corn Buntings and Yellowhammers.
It is important to provide farmland birds with extra supplementary feeding during the ‘hungry gap’ which is between late winter and early spring, when natural food sources have depleted.
This is a particularly vulnerable time; but research has shown extra support can help small birds survive the harsh weather and maintain good condition going into the breeding season. Our members ensure their bird feeders and stocked up during this key time and enjoy comparing notes on how many birds are visiting.
