The Arun to Adur Farmers Group has purchased 300 large barrel bird feeders which have been distributed across member’s farms, with 10 tonnes of bespoke bird feed being distributed each year, benefiting key species such as Corn Buntings and Yellowhammers. The project is in its last year of the three-year project and the group hopes to be able to continue this further for many years to come.
It is important to provide farmland birds with extra supplementary feeding during the ‘hungry gap’ which is between late winter and early spring, when natural food sources have depleted. This is a particularly vulnerable time; but research has shown extra support can help small birds survive the harsh weather and maintain good condition going into the breeding season. Our members ensure their bird feeders and stocked up during this key time and enjoy comparing notes on how many birds are visiting.
